I have been chatting with a man online who says he is in afghanistan. He says he is on special assignment. This may sound silly but how do I know if he is telling the truth? He has not given details as to what he is doing there and I wouldnt expect him to. But I am concerned that he is telling me the truth. Im not sure if this is the correct forum for such a question and I apologize if it is not. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Also many thanks to those of you who serve our country. I among others appreciate your service.

I'm always skeptical when someone say he's on a "special assignment". For one thing if he was he wouldn't be talking about it. Unless the special assignment was trying to find another method of getting water to a certain area or disposing of garbage in a different way.

The internet is full of "Soldiers" & Special Forces" or "Rangers" when most if not all were never in the Military. The real ones do not talk about what they do or did. When my son was in the Rangers they weren't even supposed to go on social networks even if they didn't admit that's what they did. There are too many people that want to do us harm that read those posts & a half way smart person can gather a lot of intelligence from them. A sensible Soldier won't talk about it on the web.

Be very careful!! If he's a poser he's more than likely also a stalker.

Replacement Fee

I was told that if a soldier wants to not be deployed he can pay what they called a replacement fee to have another soldier go in their place. This sounded liked utter nonsense to me but I thought I would ask here and get come opinions. Anyone heard of something like this?

Shenanigans!

When you originally posted, I was worried about the soldier asking for money. Now with this reply, I'm seeing the con game he's playing with you now. There is no replacement fee. Either you file for "conscientious objector" status or you have to become physically unfit to serve. Some soldiers have shot themselves to be ruled ineligible for deployment. However, there is not a way to pay to not serve. You can bet that if that did become policy there would be lawsuits filed like crazy on how that is unequal treatment.

I strongly advise you to cut off communication with this "soldier" con man now.

Never heard of that...

It sounds like another military myth. Sometimes you can swap assignments with someone of your rank & MOS. That's done if you want to go to a different Army post & you can find someone who wants the post you're presently at.

When you're in the Army you go where you're ordered to go & you can't pay to get out of a possibly dangerous assignment.
